Dear Worker, Get Well Soon!
Are you ready to dine out and visit your favorite restaurant during DC’s “Restaurant Week” (August 13-19? Just like you, we all love great quality food at a reasonable price, and Restaurant Week brings us just that.
Unfortunately, for many restaurant workers this means being forced to work while sick. Research shows that over 80% of DC restaurant workers don’t earn any paid time off, and 60% report cooking, handling, and preparing food for the public while sick.
The Restaurant Opportunities Center of Washington DC and the Paid SIck Days for All Campaign wants to make this Restaurant Week a Workers Health Week.
This is how YOU can help!
- Talk to Diners: On August 15th, in the middle of Restaurant Week, volunteers will canvass in Dupont Circle, Chinatown, and U. St during lunch and dinner hours to let people know their servers don’t have access to paid sick days and collect signatures for the campaign petition.
- Show Your Love: Are you planning on a special meal during Restaurant Week? Help us deliver flowers and Get-Well-Soon cards to Restaurant Week workers to show that we care about their treatment on the job! Many of them have had to come to work sick at some point, or may even be sick now.
PS: Tell us what restaurant you’ll be going to for Restaurant Week, or why you support paid sick days for all restaurant workers. For example, I support paid sick days for all restaurant workers because I don’t think anyone should have to choose between their health and a paycheck. So where are you dining out?
