Exciting Changes at Clinic!
After a brief break from clinics in August to reorganize and revamp, the EJC started September off with a brand new clinic schedule, a highly anticipated intake volunteer training, and an exciting new partnership with the Neighborhood Legal Service Program in SE. The majority of the changes concerned our SE clinic site, and finding a way to make the clinic more accessible to low-income workers in need of legal assistance.
We have decided to move our Bread for the City SE Clinic to Saturday mornings, the last Saturday of each month. This change follows the model of the DC Bar Pro Bono Advice and Referral Clinic, which is held the second Saturday of each month and assists over 50 clients each clinic. We believe that moving to a Saturday schedule will drastically increase the number of workers that we are able to serve. A Saturday clinic is also enticing to volunteers who are eager to help out at our Workers’ Rights Clinics, but are bogged down by work and classes during the week. The EJC is excited to hold our first Saturday SE clinic on Saturday, September 27th, with intakes beginning at 10am.
After receiving many emails from interested volunteers who wanted to participate in our Workers’ Rights Clinic, we adopted a regular schedule for volunteer trainings which will now take place the first Wednesday of every month at Bread for the City NW and the last Saturday of the month at Bread for the City SE. We had 18 new and 3 returning volunteers participate in our first training of the fall, and more than 20 signed up for next week! The EJC is very excited to welcome all of these new faces.
Our partnership with Neighborhood Legal Service Program kicked off in August, as we ran a trial run of a Friday afternoon clinic at their SE location. The partnership also includes attorney trainings, which kicked off with our very own Andrew Hass providing the NLSP attorneys with a training on wage-theft. We are excited to continue this partnership and resource-sharing, and happy to announce the opening of our 3rd clinic site, where you can find us the first and third Fridays of each month at the NLSP SE location.
