Experienced Non-Profit Executive Philip Fornaci Selected as EJC’s New Executive Director

The Employment Justice Center is delighted to announce the appointment of Philip J. Fornaci, Esq. as incoming executive director.

“This is a very exciting time at the Employment Justice Center,” said Board chair Omar Melehy of Melehy & Associates.  “We are rebuilding for and recommitting to the low-income workers of the DC metropolitan area.  Phil has the vision and leadership experience to ensure that low-wage earners are provided the greatest opportunity for financial security and sustainable empowerment through our combination of education, organizing, legislative advocacy and direct legal services.”

Mr. Fornaci has extensive management experience in non-profit organizations, including as executive director of the DC Prisoners’ Legal Services Project where he handled an expansive and complex litigation docket and engaged in community organizing, public policy advocacy, and media relations.

Prior to leading the DC Prisoners’ Legal Services Project, Mr. Fornaci was executive director of the Maryland Disability Law Center (MDLC), a statewide disability advocacy organization.  At MDLC, Mr. Fornaci was responsible for managing a staff of 45 employees and handling fundraising, financial management, and board development duties.  Mr. Fornaci also founded the statewide Maryland Civil Rights Coalition for People with Disabilities.

Mr. Fornaci has testified before and worked with legislative bodies at the local, state, and federal levels to support legislative initiatives and policy changes. That work involved a heavy focus on the employment rights of people with criminal records and low-income workers generally.

Mr. Fornaci is a graduate of Columbia University and George Washington University Law School.

Mr. Fornaci will assume his position on March 28, 2016.
